Maynard’s In Maine was founded in 1919 by Walter Maynard. Walter came to realize his dream of running a sportsman’s camp largely by fate after meeting a man by the last name of Wilson. Mr. Wilson introduced Walter to the life of a Maine Guide, which would later lead him to start not only his own guiding business, but also his own Maine cabin rental establishment.
Twelve of the thirteen cabins are original to the campground. While Walter built most of them himself, the help of a few friends—and anyone who could pound a nail straight—helped get the job done. It is said that some cabins were even built in a day or two. Originally established as “The Firs,” the main lodge was sadly destroyed in a fire. After rebuilding around 1940, the new lodge and business were given the name “Maynard’s In Maine.”
After running Maynard’s for 32 years, Walter passed away, leaving the business to his son Roger. Roger then led Maynard’s for 45 years until he too passed away, leaving the establishment to his only son, William. William and his wife, Gail, continued operations until his passing in 2024.
In March of 2025, Maynard’s In Maine was acquired by the Gallant family of Augusta, Maine. With a love for the northern outdoors—and more importantly, for Rockwood—it is a privilege to revive this beloved Maine legacy and return it to its original glory. In the months to come, new and improved accommodations will be phased in. Be sure to follow along as we keep everyone updated on our progress. We look forward to helping create many more memories in the years ahead.
